Beyond the Interior

On spaces, objects and the art of living

We believe a space should be felt before it is understood.

At MERKAY, we are interested in what happens beyond the image of a beautiful interior — in the atmosphere it creates, the way light moves through it, the objects that gradually become part of it, and the emotions it leaves behind.

For us, design is not about filling a space with beautiful things. It is about knowing what to leave out.

A room can be quiet and still have presence. A material can become the defining element of a space without asking for attention. A carefully placed object can say more than an entire collection of decorative pieces.

This is where our approach begins.

We look at architecture, interiors, art, materials and objects as parts of the same conversation. We are drawn to spaces that feel considered rather than decorated — spaces with character, restraint and a sense of permanence.

Our references are not limited to one style. We find inspiration in architecture, contemporary art, craftsmanship, fashion, hospitality and the places we encounter along the way. Sometimes it is a particular stone. Sometimes the proportions of an old building. Sometimes the way a hotel lobby makes you want to stay a little longer.

The most memorable spaces rarely follow a formula.

They evolve.

And perhaps this is what interests us most about design: the possibility of creating something that does not simply look beautiful today, but continues to feel right years from now.

MERKAY Journal is a place for these thoughts.

A collection of references, observations, materials, places and ideas that shape the way we see design — and, ultimately, the way we create.

This is where we begin.
